The Winter Tree

Five branches
connected at base, separated in thought
stripped bare
exposing their wintery frame

A robin circling above
ties a red thread to the
largest, thickest branch
And with the other end in her beak
effortlessly flies away

A crisp singular snap fills the air
the branch breaks at the core
trailing in a weightless float
Leaving the rest to absorb
the nourishment through their roots
which spread like veins
hidden deep within the earth.
